About HDLI...
The Housing and Development Law Institute (HDLI) is a nonprofit
public interest organization based in Washington, D.C. Its purpose
is to serve as a nationwide legal resource to local agencies administering
programs relating to public and affordable housing and urban redevelopment.
HDLI was founded in 1984 by a group of interested attorneys and
executive directors serving public housing and redevelopment agencies.
The founders sought, through a variety of educational activities,
to assist local agencies in dealing with an increasingly complex
legal environment. They were assisted by the
National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).
NAHRO, founded in 1933, is the nation's largest public interest
organization serving local housing agencies. It maintains a supportive
relationship with HDLI.
The Institute is presently governed by an 18-member Board of Directors
composed of prominent agency counsel and executive directors from
across the nation. Among its directors and counsel are the Executive
Director of NAHRO and three former General Counsels of the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), including Jane
Lang (McGrew) who also remains Of Counsel to the Institute.
The Institute is non-partisan and does not engage in lobbying or
other political activities. It is supported primarily through membership
fees and publication subscriptions.
